2009: Read on the Wild Side

Animal
Madness
Monday, June 1 – Friday,
July 31
All district cardholders, ages 2 through
adult, are invited to join the Summer Reading Program “Read on the Wild Side” at
the Palatine Public Library District. Join this summer’s animal madness of
reading, fun and prizes. Bring your Palatine Public Library District card and
sign up at the Main Library, Freeman Road Branch or Rand Road Branch beginning
Monday, June 1. Bookmobile sign up will begin Saturday, June 6. Everyone who
completes the program will receive a grand prize T-shirt, generously provided by
the Friends of the Palatine Library. The program ends on Friday, July 31 at the
respective closing time of each location. As always, participants will have an
opportunity to “Read On” in August.
Wanted: Household Who "Read on the Wild Side"
Grab the whole household and come to the
Main Library wearing your “Read on the Wild Side” T-shirts and you will receive
a movie theatre gift card. We’ll take your photo, or bring in your own wild
household photo, and then we’ll display it on our gallery of Wild Side Summer
Readers at the library and online. All members of a household must complete the
requirements by Friday, July 31 to be eligible for this prize.
Please claim your prize by Monday, August 31. Prizes sponsored by a grant from

Are You Prepared to Go Wild?
Before
you “Read on the Wild Side”, check to be sure your library card is valid and has
less than $5.00 in fines and fees. A quick check at the circulation desk can
tell you if your card is in good standing. To participate, patrons aged 14 or
over need their own card to register for the Summer Reading Program. To sign up
for a new library card, please provide proof of residence in the Palatine Public
Library District.
All library cards will be checked for
validation at time of registration.
Ravinia Tickets
Adults who sign up for Summer Reading
within the first three days, June 1, 2, or 3, will be entered into a raffle for
a chance to win a pair of Ravinia tickets!

30-Minute Chocolate Desserts
Tuesday,
June 16, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Pastry Chef Rose Deneen will demonstrate
4 easy-breezy chocolate desserts, including chocolate mousse in a chocolate cup
and a white chocolate raspberry trifle. Recipes and samples included! Register,
valid District cardholders only.
Baseball in the Movies
Wednesday,
June 24, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Calling all baseball fans! Celebrate the
greatest all-American pastime with a spectacular collection of clips from
classic baseball movies and commentary from film historian, Steve Frenzel. This
program is sure to please all baseball fans from the young to the
young at heart! Adults, children, and
families welcome!

Florence: The Cradle of the Renaissance

Petra: The Rose Red City
Wednesday,

Petra flourished as the capital of the
Nabateans between the 4th century B.C. and the Roman occupation in 106 A.D.
Located at the crossroads of international commerce in the center of the caravan
trade, this once-thriving city is remarkable for its rose red colored
architectural forms carved out of the stratified rock. Learn about this stunning
ancient city in this Art Excursions lecture presented by Jeff Mishur.
