12-year-old Alice isn't thrilled about moving from Seattle, Washington to Sinkville, South Carolina. In Seattle, Alice never thought twice about the fact that she was born with albinism and severely impaired vision. Everyone--childhood playmates, kids at school, neighbors--already knew about her condition, and Alice's mom and best friend were always around to guide her. But in Sinkville, everything is different. A terrible depression sidelines her mom; her dad is preoccupied with his new job; and Alice's older brother resents her dependence and refuses to help her get to know the town.
