Megan Buttera, Assistant Manager of Popular Materials at the Palatine Public Library District, was the 2012 recipient of the Illinois Library Association Crosman Memorial Award.

The award recognizes the achievements of library workers who are new or relatively new to the field and encourages continued involvement in the profession. The award is sponsored by Mortenson Construction.

Megan “hit the ground running” when she began her library career in 2004 at the North Chicago Public Library. During the past eight years, she has served as a trustee of the Zion-Benton Public Library and on the Board of the North Suburban Library System. In addition, she earned her Masters in Library and Information Science through the LEEP program at the University of Illinois. As a member of the Illinois Library Association, Megan has also been a presenter at ILA Annual Conference programs and has been invited as a speaker at library in-service days.

At the Palatine Library, Megan was hired as the Library’s first Teen Librarian and has been instrumental in developing programs for teens including district-wide celebrations for National Gaming Day, Teen Read Week, and Teen Tech Week. She established the Library’s first Teen Advisory Board. Megan’s book-talks have been recorded and placed online for access by students and teachers. Due to her efforts at serving teens, attendance at programs has increased by 114%.

Through her efforts and accomplishments, Megan fulfills both the guidelines and the spirit of the Crosman Memorial Award. “I am honored to receive such an award,” states Megan Buttera, “and would like to thank all those who have inspired and challenged me, including teachers and colleagues.”

The award was presented at the Illinois Library Association Annual Conference Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois.
