Palatine Public Library District Volunteer Program
The mission of the Palatine Public Library District’s volunteer program is to provide suitable opportunities for volunteers to assist staff and patrons in order to enrich patrons’ experiences while enhancing the relationship between the Library and the community.
Volunteers must be a valid Palatine Public Library District cardholder and at least 16 years old. Policy 8-12 of Policy 8 - Community Relations provides further information regarding the volunteer program and requirements to become a volunteer.
The Library has a variety of volunteer opportunities:
- Weekly Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week,
- Special Project Volunteers assist staff completing special projects or events, and
- Short Term Volunteers (3 months or less) are those seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements for school or other organizations and must be required to serve a minimum of 15 hours.
Please note: The Palatine Public Library District is unable to accept court-ordered or court-supervised community service.

Befriend A Shelf Volunteer - Help staff maintain assigned shelves by shelf-reading to ensure proper order, keeping area surrounding shelves neat and any other assigned tasks. Various areas of our Fiction collection are available. Volunteers can choose which day and time to volunteer.
Branch Volunteer – Assist at the Rand Road Branch on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The Branch Volunteer shelves books, shelf-reads to ensure books are in proper order and assists staff as needed. The Rand Road Branch is located in the Palatine Opportunity Center at 1585 Rand Road, Palatine, IL.Special Project Volunteers:

There are currently no Special Project Volunteer opportunities available.
Self-Checkout/Hold Volunteer - Assist the Circulation Department on Wednesday evenings. As a Self-Checkout/Hold Volunteer, you will help patrons with their holds and self-checkouts, and assist Circulation staff with shelving holds and casing cd's and dvd's.
Branch Volunteer - Please see the information listed under Weekly Volunteers. The Branch Volunteer opportunity at our Rand Road Branch is also available for a short term volunteer.

It’s easy! Volunteer applications are available at the Information Desk at the main library and at each of the Library’s branches, or you can download the form. Please remember to indicate the volunteer opportunity you are interested in on the application.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to the Palatine Public Library District Volunteer Program, there are several opportunities for those under the age of 16. The Library has a Teen Advisory Board (TAB), Summer Reading Volunteers and Book Buddies. These programs are through our Popular Materials Department and have a separate application. Both Summer Reading and Book Buddies volunteer during June through August and the Teen Advisory Board meets monthly during the school year.
