How to Apply

Thank you to all that applied to volunteer at the Library this Summer!

Applicants will be notified by May 24 if they have been accepted.


A valid District card is required.

For students entering grades 7-12 in the Fall.

Mandatory orientation June 4, 3:00-4:00 p.m.

(Make-up orientation June 6)


All teens selected will be notified by May 24 with their team assignment.

Team Descriptions

Book Buddies

Mondays, 3:00-4:00 p.m. (6 hours)
June 17-July 29 (No July 1)

Do you like sharing stories with others? Volunteers select and pull books for the program and help a young reader in grades 1-4 strengthen their skills and develop confidence through reading together.

Circulation Main Helpers

Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, 3:00-5:00 p.m. (20 hours)
June 5-August 9

If you like to work independently and can focus on one task at a time this is a good team for you! Volunteers will be shelving holds, DVDs, Blu-rays and children’s books in alphabetical order. Volunteers must come in and pass a shelving test prior to being selected.

Craft Crew

Thursdays, Shift times: 9:30-11:00 a.m., 11:00-12:30 p.m., 12:30-2:00 p.m., 5:00-6:30 p.m., 6:30-8:00 p.m. (13.5 hours)
June 6-August 8 (No July 4)

Like crafts? Volunteers help keep the craft room organized throughout the day. Volunteers may also help with preparing materials for youth programs.

History Makers

Thursdays, 2:00-3:15 p.m. (6+ hours)
June 6-July 11 (No July 4)

Are you interested in social media and photography? Help the social media team with a project focused on the history of the Library. Dig through archived materials to search for post-worthy ideas and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our social media strategies to rule the Library WORLD.

Kindergarten Helpers

Thursdays, 1:00-4:00 p.m. (10+ hours)
July 18, 25 & August 1

Volunteers assist with our Get Ready for Kindergarten program by setting up materials, reading stories, supervising activities at stations, and cleaning up when the program ends. Volunteers are also required to sign up for one Wednesday evening from 6:15-7:15 p.m. to observe a storytime.

Parade Decorating Group

Thursdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m. (10 hours)
June 6-27
Parade Walk on July 6, 10:30-12:30 p.m.

Are you creative? Do you like parades? Volunteers make decorations for the Palatine Hometown Fest Parade on Saturday, July 6, to coordinate with the summer reading theme; It's Showtime at Palatine Library. Walk in the parade; pass out candy, smile, and wave to the crowd to help promote the library! Summer reading t-shirts must be worn for the parade.


Electronic correspondence - 1 hour per review, max 2 reviews per week (20 hours)

Love to read and share your thoughts? Volunteers help others find new and exciting books by writing reviews for the Library’s Teen Goodreads account!


Tuesdays, 2:00-4:00 p.m. (20 hours)
June 4-August 6

Like science or technology? Maybe art, math, or engineering? Volunteers demonstrate the weekly activity and provide assistance during our weekly drop-in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activity.

Tech Services Crew

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays 2:00-3:00 p.m. (10 hours)
June 5-August 9 (one shift a week)

If you’re organized, detail oriented, and self-motivated this is the team for you! Get a behind the scenes look at how our Technical Services department works. Volunteers operate out quick 30-second disc cleaning machine where they can sit and listen to music while they work.

Do you like video games and learning about technology? Join this team to help run video game, equipment, and resource demos at the Library. Volunteers help set up and run video game tournaments, open play, and VR game drop-ins.

Get an inside look on how the Library works and what it does. Volunteers receive hands-on training from Library administrators and management and use those skills to represent themselves and the Library at outreach events (Farmer’s market, story times in the park, and the 4th of July parade.) At the end of the summer, volunteers give a brief presentation to the Library management team to share what they’ve learned!
