10th Annual Poetry Contest
March 15 - April 15
Celebrate National Poetry Month by writing your own poetry!
How to Enter
Deadline for this year's contest was April 15. Thank you to all that submitted!
Submit your entry at the Main Library or any Branch. Include a completed Entry Form with your submission.
Mail your poem and Entry Form to:

Postmark deadline: April 15. Postal entries must be received by April 22 to be eligible for judging.
Poets of all ages may submit 1 typed, unpublished poem (40 lines or less).
- Youth (Lower Elementary): preschool through grade 3
- Youth (Upper Elementary): grades 4-6
- Teens: grades 7-12
- Adults: ages 18+
Work is judged “blind;” omit personal info (i.e. your name) from your entry.
There is no entry fee.
Poems are displayed in the Main Library as space permits. We cannot return entries.
Awards & Prizes
Contest open to Illinois Northwest Suburban residents only.
Palatine Library residents compete for the Nancy J. Heggem Poetry Awards. Nonresidents living in the Northwest Suburbs compete for the Library’s Write-On Awards.
Based on the number of entries received, contest judges will select up to 4 resident winners and up to 4 nonresident winners. All winners receive a certificate and publication of their poem on the Libray's website. Nancy Heggem Award winners also receive a cash prize ($25) donated by Nancy Heggem. Write-On Award winners receive a magnetic poetry kit.
Prizes and certificates must be picked up in person.
Winners will be notified by phone in early May.
The Library cannot return entries or mail prizes.
Current Palatine Library staff, board members, and trustees are not eligible for prizes.
Celebrate with Us
Winners are announced at a ceremony and open mic on Sunday, May 5, 2:30 pm.
